Based in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin, New Zealand. We are Kiwi owned and operated, and we hire New Zealand law students. We never subcontract to outside agencies.
Have you ever wondered what some secret tips and tricks for Law School are? Perhaps things that no ordinary student would tell you…but Elan Education would! Have a read of this blog to get some insight into some things you can do to make your journey at law school a lot easier.
Some Practical Tools For The First Few Weeks:
- Don’t develop a habit of procrastination. We’ve all been there and through our fair share of excuses; “I’ll start at the next round hour, I’ll just binge watch lecture recordings, I’ll eventually do that reading.” Law School is intense and with things piling on top of one another, you eventually find yourself at the end of a giant row of dominoes. Read as regularly as possible, go to your classes {you may as well when you’re paying} and try find a study buddy!
- Work smarter, not harder. Find a friend who’s keen on sharing notes and some analysis on readings. This not only make things easier for the both of you because you’ve split the workload, but you can help each other learn things you are strong in. This is a really great way to stay motivated too. Every time they don’t show up to class, get them to shout you a coffee.
- Make connections! Don’t forget to talk to your class reps anytime because they exist to answer your questions and then go annoy the lecturer about them. Ask a lot of questions at law tutorials and don’t be afraid, because truly no question is a dumb one. At least 50 other people in your stream probably have the same one.
LIFE HACKS 101
LIFE HACK – You CAN get permission to enrol in classes that are “full.” A lot of students do not realise these options are available, so use them wisely when in need!
- Apply for a concession! In Law School, if written in a compelling way – these concessions are more likely to get approved than any other faculty.
- Contact the head of the department. Alternatively, you can communicate your circumstances to the HOD with a sincere email encapsulating why you need to get into a particular class.
What do I include to make a concession compelling?
Here are some great tips on what to write:
- If you have a timetable clash, state that you will be committed to keeping up with the content of both classes, despite the timetable clash/overlap. Also let them know that you will keep in touch with your peers and lecturers/course coordinators to keep up to date with assignments and meet deadlines.
- If the class is “full,” explain why not getting in will ruin your year plan for the degree / why you cannot take that particular course next semester / why taking it is an absolute necessity for your academic progress.
- You can also mention {if you are a 1st year} that accepting you is just one more spot taken and explain how you will make this spot valuable.
LIFE HACK – You CAN attend different streams. For lectures, you are easily able to attend a different stream than the one on your timetable. Trust us, nobody minds. We’ve also heard you can do the same with tutorials but would like to remind you guys that the Official University position on swapping tutorials is a no. Furthermore, in tutorials because there are much smaller groups of people (10 compared to a 500 person lecture), you are more likely to be noticed as tutors know their kids personally.
Hopefully these tips come in handy to some of you! EXCITING NEWS – Elan Education has some exciting events coming for first years.
