New Year, New Students: LLB Part I Admissions at the University of Auckland.

Are you a recent high school graduate eager to dive headfirst into the world of law? Or are you a current student who is keen on switching to an LLB? The LLB program at UoA is your golden ticket to kickstart your career in the legal world. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the nitty gritty of UoA’s admission criteria, a sneak-peek into the content of LAW121 (your very first law paper), and the requirements LLB Part I.

Getting In, No Secret Handshake Required

Admission to UoA’s LLB program isn’t a walk in the park. They do have standards, but hey, it’s all part of the game. Your grades matter, so keep those books open! The University likes to see decent High School grades and wants you to check if you’ve got the prerequisites down pat.

What is a conjoint degree?

A conjoint is required in your first year of law as you will only be taking three law papers total in your first year (Law 121, Law 131, and Law 141). A conjoint degree is when you double up on your education and study two different subjects at the same time, earning two separate degrees when you graduate. It’s like getting a two-for-one deal in your education! But don’t worry, you can change your conjoint and continue with law, or drop your conjoint entirely after Part I.

What are the prerequisites?

If you have achieved the New Zealand University Entrance (UE) standard and you’re already enrolled in another program at the University, you’re in for LLB Part I! Otherwise, if you’ve got a degree under your belt or you’re already doing another University of Auckland bachelor’s program, you will be admitted into LLB Part I.

But what does this mean?

Different conjoints have varying requirements for entry into LLB Part I. To figure out your points, I’d suggest reaching out to your high school. They’ll be able to guide you on how to check your points since the process can vary from one school to another.

For example an LLB/BA (Bachelor of Arts) Conjoint requirements are:

Score requirement:

  1. NCEA: 210
  2. or CIE: 210
  3. or IB: 28

Or for something a more specialised like a LLB/BHSc (Bachelor of Health Sciences) the requirements are quite a bit higher:

Score requirement:

  1. NCEA: 250
    1. With 18 credits in one of English, Geography, History, Classical Studies, History of Art, Te Reo Māori (or Te Reo Rangatira) or Social Studies and a minimum of 18 credits in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
  2. or CIE: 300
    1. With one of English, Geography, History, Classical Studies and one of Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at full A Level.
  3. or IB: 33

How long does acceptance take?

Once your High School grades come in, acceptance is usually pretty quick from UoA. Their website officially says four weeks, but normally admission will be granted in a week or so depending on how busy they are.
